Rope-A-Dope: How Liverpool Lost A Treble

182 minutes into Liverpool and Atlético Madrid’s round of 16 battle of the UEFA Champions League, the Spanish outfit were awarded a free-kick from roughly 30 yards out. With the game otherwise going to extra-time, Renan Lodi sent the ball into the Liverpool penalty area where Saúl Ñiguez was waiting to head home for victory. The goal was ruled out for offside but, whether they knew it or not, this was the moment Liverpool lost the Champions League.

UCL Preview: Atalanta vs Valencia

Every year in the Champions League, there are one or two teams that are always the most sought after draws. Invariably they are teams that manage to score an upset or two in the Group Stage or maybe finished second place on goal difference, perhaps? With all due respect, Valencia and Atalanta are two of these “preferred draws” but they both have certain qualities that could pose a challenge for other teams. Thankfully for both, they face each other in the Round of 16.

UCL Preview: Manchester City vs Real Madrid

Last season’s record breaking Premier League winners finished the year in third place. Manchester City sit 14 points off of the leaders, having already lost more games this season than they did in the year prior. With the league firmly lost, a Champions League trophy would be one of the better consolations. Real Madrid, however, ended their year just two points off Barcelona. The Cristiano Ronaldo chapter appears to have finally ended and Zinedine Zidane can begin working towards a prosperous future. In their competition, Madrid face a team that will leave everything on the field.
