Bayern Munich began the Bundesliga on a high note against Schalke 04 on Friday, beating them 8:0. Goals from the usual culprits of Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller were accompanied by efforts from former Schalke players Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sané in his Bayern Munich debut, a hattrick from Serge Gnabry and an Arjen Robben esque shot from 17 year old Jamal Musiala.
Bayern look to have started their title defence strongly and seem to have picked up from where they left last season.
182 minutes into Liverpool and Atlético Madrid’s round of 16 battle of the UEFA Champions League, the Spanish outfit were awarded a free-kick from roughly 30 yards out. With the game otherwise going to extra-time, Renan Lodi sent the ball into the Liverpool penalty area where Saúl Ñiguez was waiting to head home for victory. The goal was ruled out for offside but, whether they knew it or not, this was the moment Liverpool lost the Champions League.
7 years ago, on a warm evening in West London, Bayern Munich won an all-German Champions League final against a team that finished second to them in virtually every competition that season. It was Bayern’s second trophy of what would go on to become a quintuple winning 2013. It was also the year that the rivalry between them and Borussia Dortmund really peaked.
